Strawberry DNA & Polyploidy:
What happens with multiple sets of chromosomes??
Griffith, Avery, Hershey & Chase; the beginnings of discovery
Crash Course in Chem- to help understand DNA- how all the pieces fit together
Putting it together- compiling what you know to make a molecule!
Putting it together
Activities:
1) lecture/ review of haploid, diploid, homologus chromosomes
2) demonstration (or LAB if possible) of DNA extraction within strawberries
3) discussion of polyploidy in humans (aneuploidy) and nondisjunction within meiosis; to polyploidy in agriculture
1) powerpoint story-telling, along with a worksheet to help keep focus and take notes
1) Review of yesterday's material- what about DNA did they discover about how DNA is built? What molecules are involved?
2) Demonstration of hydrogen bonding vs. covalent bonding (bases vs. sugar-phosphate backbone)
3) Explanation upon board of how to figure out H-bonds
1) Go over hydrogen bond worksheet
2) Draw molecules of A, T, G, C on board as set up for activity on piecing the DNA together - chargaff's rule too!
3) Students work in groups to connect the bases
1) Review of H-bonding, and A, T, G, C molecules & how they SHOULD connect!
2) Continuation- how does the rest of the molecule fit together??
3) discussion of sugar-phosphate backbone (if time permits!)
Biology A, B
10th grade, cooperating teacher- Mr. JohnsonL.Paetznick
Schedule for Week Beginning on 3/30
Focus Topics: DNA structure and function
